General Bdl-55Y favorite of fashion and portrait shooters, the 55 Beauty Dish Reflector from General bounces the light off a centrally positioned deflector and is directed to fill the white reflector interior. The result is a signature soft look but with an edge of crispness (ideal for hair and makeup), that you can’t get from umbrellas and softboxes. For those who want a softer look, a diffusion sock is included. The reflector’s white interior renders a soft, neutral quality of light. An added bonus is the natural-looking catchlights that appear in the subject’s eyes. Optional accessories include a honeycomb grid to tunnel and direct the light output.

The Beauty Dish is the perfect accessory for the portrait photographer, uniquely diffusing light to provide high output with moderate feathering.
Unlike a light box or reflector that has a “luminous” surface, a beauty dish has a circle of light with an opaque center and an internal light barrier that allows only bounce light. How does a beauty dish compare to a light box? Since the beauty dish is smaller, this will result in softer shadows.
It will also provide moderate circular pickup lights in the eyes, where a light box would provide larger rectangular pickup lights.
The beauty dish uses an 80 degree parabolic reflector to focus light towards a contoured area.
Beauty plates also come with a diffusion "sock" for more control over the intensity of shades.
You can use the soft diffuser cover and honeycomb grid to change the light pattern even further, creating a wraparound, contrasting look, adding a very dramatic effect.
The honeycomb grid contains the light in a more tubular pattern, for more spot light effect without light spill.
